| The farm is now closed to visitors until next year. Over the next several weeks we will be unavailable for appointments due to a heavy propagation work load. We will continue to ship daylilies until September 1st (We do not recommend later planting of daylilies in Wisconsin due to volatile weather conditions). |
The Bremer's
Solaris Farms specializes in far northern hardy daylilies and we hybridize
for this much needed plant characteristic. Our mission in hybridizing
is...better plant, better
scapes and better flowers in that order! Solaris
Farms is located in an area of harsh winter climate that experiences greater
than normal freeze-thaw cycles, icing and exposure. With these factors in
mind, Solaris Farms is working on programs involving clear vibrant colors,
unusual forms and ruffling of reds. Both diploid and tetraploid daylily lines
are actively being hybridized. If you are tired of plants that do not
perform or even survive in the north, give us a try-we guarantee your 'hardy'
satisfaction! Great garden daylilies must not only survive, but be
productive as plants! Our plants do not require special winter
attention and have been tested without mulching or extra care. Southern
genetics are used sparingly, or not at all in our hybridizing program, since
hardy genetics can be easily diluted. The farm is a State of Wisconsin
registered and inspected nursery and an official American Hemerocallis Society
Display Garden.
We are also in the process of propagating herbaceous, intersectional, and tree Peonies. The peonies are also being tested in our fields for hardiness and performance in our area. While we have a wide variety of Peonies, we seldom stock large numbers of any one cultivar for sale. This allows us to have a greater selection, rather than having large field rows of just a few varieties. We are working hard to bring a greater variety of advanced generation lutea hybrids for future sales. This will take time however, since their propagation requires both time and a certain degree of expertise. Look for many of these fine plants in years to come. Peonies are only dug in October and will be shipped or pre-dug for pickup at the farm. Peony bloom season visitation may be set up for this spring, stay posted as we will place this information on this page.
Solaris Farms is adding Lilium (true lilies) to our plant sales selection as well. Here again, we propagate all of the plants we sell, therefore, time will be needed to build our stocks. We will have just a few varieties for sale this year. These may be ordered when shopping for daylilies or through the mail, but will be shipped or ready for pick up until the fall, when peonies are dug.
Visitors are welcome from July
10th through August 15th, and by appointment other times.
We are closed on
Mondays and Tuesdays during the July 10 to August 15 period to catch our
breath.
Peak daylily bloom is a great time to visit and we will dig plants for customers
to take home on the spot. For more information about farm visits, hours,
directions, etc...., please use our link to
Visiting the Farm.
Please see our 'Hardy Plant Info' pages for thoughts, news, perspectives, and some opinions we generated over the past years. Weather, disease, daylily economics, daylily cultivars and hardiness are among some of the subjects tackled. Peonies have become a new passion at the farm and we are working to supply solid information for Wisconsin gardeners interested in this outstanding plant as well.
If you are interested in getting involved with daylilies in greater depth, consider joining our local daylily society...Bay Area Daylily Buds. The club has many great activities for both the beginner and the avid daylily enthusiasts.
Enjoy and hope to see you in July 2008!
